  ACOEM Guideline:

Preventing Needless Work Disability by Helping People Stay Employed

Meeting Center

What are quasi-medical communications?

Quasi-medical communications consist of information and guidance about the implications of a person's health condition for other parts of life.  Examples include:

  • ability to remain at or return to a pre-existing job
  • need for special supervision or accommodations
  • suitability or eligibility for various types of insurance and other benefits
  • safety at work
  • public safety
  • qualification for special privileges
  • suitability for future tasks or employment settings
  • activities of daily living
  • and so forth.

Poor quasi-medical communications between doctors, their patients, and their patients' employers and workers' compensation and disability insurance carriers needlessly hinder and delay the process of returning to work following injury or illness.

Today, these poor communications create needless disruption in hundreds of thousands of injured and ill peoples' workplaces, homes, and families, and divert billions of dollars into medically-unnecessary benefit costs.
