Work Disability Prevention Rounds: "Patient Management III:  Dealing With Psychiatric Overlay"

Osler said "tell me about the patient who has the disease, not the disease that has the patient".  Since that time, research has confirmed that non medical psychosocial issues have a profound influence on outcomes.  In addition, however, unacknowledged or undertreated frank mental illness often accompanies and delays healing of physical conditions.  Patients often resist this message, and mental health services are often in short supply.  How can a front-line physician best handle these issues?

  • Addressing normal human reactions to illness, injury and work disability
  • How to recognize and deal with psychiatric co-morbidities
  • Simple techniques to help patients with low resilience and poor coping skills
  • Simple techniques to help patients with depression and anxiety
  • When to refer and to whom
  • What to do when "doing the right thing" seems impossible
  • Resources: Local people & web resources
